February 5, 2004 Letter to the Editor The Daily Star, Oneonta, NY "Domestic Partnership Ordinance" |
|
Dear Editor, The Daily Star: As a proud member of the gay and lesbian community in Oneonta, not as the city clerk and the one who proposed this legislation, I commend the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee for agreeing to consider a proposed domestic partner ordinance. This will be a giant step forward in recognizing the importance of alternative lifestyles beyond the traditional concept of marriage. It will send the message we're an accepting community; proud of its diversity. The domestic partner legislation isn't only for same-sex partners but for heterosexual relationships. This ordinance will provide recognition of those relationships. The domestic partner legislation isn't a legally binding marriage contract. The city of Oneonta will not be offering any financial or other benefits other than the notarized statement of partnership. The domestic partnership isn't premised on a sexual relationship. The people in the domestic partnership are simply declaring they're in a relationship of mutual support and are responsible for each other's maintenance and welfare. The domestic partner legislation will not undermine the institution of marriage and will not contribute to the breakdown of the traditional family unit. The domestic partner legislation is simply a way of supporting alternative enduring, loving and caring relationships. The religious right is so quick to hold up Bibles and state the "Word of God" disallows such unions. The primary message of the Bible is one of love and tolerance, not judging others. This legislation is in no way inconsistent with these teachings. I sincerely hope the Common Council is able to see beyond the bigotry and rhetoric of the religious right and others. I hope council members will do what is right and just and pass the domestic partner legislation, making Oneonta a much better, much more accepting community than it already is.
